Electrical Outlets for any Home and Device

There are many types of electrical outlets, each designed for a specific purpose. The most common type of outlet is the standard 120-volt outlet, which is used for general-purpose appliances such as lamps and computers. A 240-volt outlet is used for high-powered appliances such as stoves and dryers. Additionally, GFCI outlets are now required by code in rooms or areas that experience moisture. If you want to get more advanced, there are also smart outlets that allow USB ports to charge devices. The electricians at Mario Castillo Electric are expertly trained to manage and install outlets for a variety of functions. We can give you recommendations on the best outlets for your home, given the room, area, and electrical load required.

2-Prong Vs. 3-Prong

Many people wonder what the difference is between 2-prong and 3-prong outlets. All outlets have two main slots - one for the hot wire and one for the neutral wire. If your home is built more than 25 years ago, you may see outlets with 2-prongs. Modern 3-prong outlets have an additional slot for the ground wire. The ground wire provides an extra level of safety by conducting electricity away from the outlet if there is a short circuit. 3-prong outlets are now required by building codes, so it’s important to update an older home with these outlets for safe delivery of power to your home. Have questions on whether your outlets are up-to-date and up-to-code?

Contact Mario Castillo Electric today and we’ll complete a full electrical inspection and recommend the best next steps for your home.

GFCI Outlet Installation

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets are specially designed outlets that help to protect against electrical shocks.  They are required in areas that experience moisture, including kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, and outdoors. GFCI outlets work by constantly monitoring the current flowing through the circuit. If the current suddenly drops or increases, the GFCI outlet will trip and cut off power to the circuit. This can help to prevent serious injuries or even death due to electrical shock.

The professionals at Mario Castillo Electric will provide proper GFCI outlet installation for an extra layer of protection against electrical hazards in the places where they matter most - your home!

Frequently Asked Questions

Mario Castillo Electric is a trusted name in the electric industry, and we pride ourselves on providing exceptional service to our clients. We understand that navigating the world of electric services can be confusing, which is why we’ve compiled a list of common questions. View our resource below for homeowners and businesses.

What's the Difference Between 2 Prong and 3 Prong Outlets?

All outlets have a “hot” slot (the right one) and a “neutral” slot (the left one). When you plug in an appliance, electricity flows from the hot slot, through your appliance, and back to the neutral slot. Outlets are made to handle a certain amount of electricity. (Usually 120 volts). So, what happens if there is more electricity than what it can handle? That electricity has to go somewhere. If you have a 3 prong grounded outlet, that third slot is the “ground” slot. The ground slot sends the extra electricity into the ground. If you DON’T have that third slot, the extra power/watts can go to you or your home, resulting in injury or electrical fires. Click here to learn more.

What Outlets Do I Need In My Bathroom and Kitchen?

Areas with moisture including bathrooms and kitchens need GFCI. GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. A GFCI will protect you from electrical shocks by sensing the amount of electricity flowing through the circuit. If the flow becomes too great, the GFCI will shut off the circuit. That is why these types of outlets are required in areas with an increased risk of shock due to water or other electrical hazards. Click here to learn more.
